What are my wage and hour rights?
Federal and state Fair Labor Standards Acts (FLSA) require employers to pay employees for all hours of work performed. This includes “off-the-clock” work performed before the start of or after the end of an employee’s shift. Some examples of this “off-the-clock” work include:
- Warming the bus in cold weather or cooling it in hot weather
- Delaying work due to bad whether
- Performing safety checks
- Completing and submitting paperwork
- Waiting for students to be released from classes
Am I protected from retaliation for asserting my rights?
Yes. Federal and state FLSAs prohibit employers from retaliating against employees who assert their wage and hour rights.
