May 28, 2019 – Last week, Joni Thome and Kaarin Nelson Schaffer presented at the 2019 Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute (ELI) held at the RiverCentre in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota. ELI is the preeminent conference for employment lawyers and human resource professionals from across the upper Midwest to gather and discuss the latest developments in employment law. The Institute, which is one of the largest and best-attended conferences of its type in the country, provides practitioners with up-to-date education and resources throughout the employment law field. Joni and Kaarin joined other leaders in employment law to discuss some of the most important legal issues confronting practitioners and their clients.

Joni Thome joined defense attorney Sara McGrane to discuss the state of whistleblower law in Minnesota. In their session, titled “8 Most Important Whisleblower Cases: The Cases You Must Know and How They Impact Plaintiffs and Defense Attorneys,” Joni and Sara discussed the key whistleblower decisions all litigators should know and the lessons they teach to employment law practitioners.

Kaarin Nelson Schaffer joined a panel that included Cynthia Bremer and Larry Schaefer to present strategies for overcoming and winning summary judgment in sexual harassment cases. In light of the #Me-Too movement, the panel explored what evidence may meet the “severe or pervasive” standard, the scope of discovery and how “the reasonable women” standard applies to cases in a rapidly changing legal environment.
